Frank Powers

One of the founders of the club, he originated the term “type director” to give the role a more professional standing; he was in 1946 the TDC’s first President, followed by two additional presidencies in 1961 and 1962; and served as tireless chairman of many TDC committees. Director of Typography for J. Walter Thompson for 22 years. Powers prepared club announcements on his home printing press, making printing plates from “a jar top, string, cork letters, a medal, linoleum, rubber tile, and cardboard.” At his ceremony, Powers’ long-time friend said, “We have been privileged to stand in the shadow of his light that marks his achievement… We celebrate him because he held a firm hand, tireless in an often strenuous world, to emerge unscathed, a bigger man in a greater Type Directors Club.”
