SUMMARY:Visual Storytelling: A Collaborative\, Interactive Workshop with Debbie Millman
DESCRIPTION:Visual Storytelling is the art of using language and images to convey a narrative account of real or imagined events. Historically\, humans have used this sharing of experience to pass on knowledge\, beliefs\, values\, secrets and information. Through stories we explain how things are\, why they are\, and our role and purpose. Stories are the building blocks of knowledge and the foundation of memory and learning. Stories connect us with our humanness and link past\, present\, and future by sharing all of the possible consequences and outcomes of our behavior and actions. \nVisual Storytelling combines the narrative text of a story with creative elements to augment and enhance the traditional storytelling process. By design\, it is a co-creative process resulting in an intimate\, interpretive expressive technique. Visual Storytelling passes on the essence of who we are and utilizes both language and art. Stories are a prime vehicle for assessing and interpreting events\, experiences\, and concepts from minor moments of daily life to the grand nature of the human condition. It is an intrinsic and basic form of human communication. Our ancestors as far back as the cave man have been using visual stories to document and record experiences. Today\, the visualization of our personal stories is an integral and essential part of the human experience. \nEffective visual storytelling is a remarkable art form. In this two-day workshop\, artist and writer Debbie Millman will work with a group of students interested in exploring the art of telling a story through a unique combination of images and words. In this workshop\, we will investigate the ability stories have to honor the diversity and commonality of our collective human experience. \nIn this workshop\, we will do the following: \n• Work to define and refine the basic narrative structure of a story \n• Plot the visual arc of a story \n• Create the visual language of the story \nThe workshop will result in the creation of a visual story for each participant.\n\nRequirements of participants: \nEach participant of this workshop should come to the workshop with a first draft of a story or essay of approximately 500-900 words. In addition\, the participants should come with creative tools they would like to use to visually express their story\, i.e.\, paint\, canvases\, boards\, colored pencils\, crayons\, chalk\, chalkboard\, yarn\, thread\, fabric\, paper\, journals\, photographs\, etc. For examples\, please look at Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design\, by Debbie Millman. \nBiography\nNamed “one of the most influential designers working today” by Graphic Design USA\, Debbie Millman is also an author\, educator\, brand strategist and host of the podcast Design Matters. As the founder and host of Design Matters\, the first and longest running podcast about design\, Millman has interviewed more than 250 design luminaries and cultural commentators. In the 11 years since its inception\, the show has garnered over a million download per year\, a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and—most recently—iTunes designated it one of the best podcasts of 2015. \nDebbie’s written and visual essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times\, New York Magazine\, Print Magazine\, Design Observer and Fast Company. She is the author of two books of illustrated essays: Look Both Ways and Self-Portrait As Your Traitor; the later of which has been awarded a Gold Mobius\, a Print Typography Award\, and a medal from the Art Directors Club. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Boston Biennale\, Chicago Design Museum\, Anderson University\, School of Visual Arts\, Long Island University\, The Wolfsonion Museum and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art. She has been artist-in-residence at Cranbrook University\, Old Dominion University and Notre Dame University\, and has conducted visual storytelling workshops at Academy of Art University in San Francisco\, the University of Utah\, Hartford University\, Albuquerque Academy and the High School of Art and Design in New York. \nDebbie is the author of six books\, including two collections of interviews that have extended the ethos and editorial vision of Design Matters to the printed page: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. \n \nPowered by Eventbrite\n\nCancellation Policy: If you must cancel\, please notify us via e-mail at director@tdc.org by Thursday\, March 2\, 2017. SUMMARY:Education Series: Not The Usual History of Design: Part One
DESCRIPTION:This is not a typical history of design survey course. No memorizing dates\, no tests\, no quizzes\, no essays\, no slides. Think of this as a rare chance to see and touch all those famous pieces of design you once saw in books or online. Come to hear stories and to learn about the crucial context behind the works. Leave with a better understanding of the bigger picture of styles\, movements\, and the eras. All of the materials will come from the vast collection of design ephemera at the Herb Lubalin Study Center and other collections. The five two-hour-long classes will meet on Wednesday evenings\, and cover the following topics: evolution of the magazine; evolution of the poster; evolution of advertising; evolution of the book; evolution of branding/corporate identity. Some topics may change slightly due to availability or fragility of materials. \nAlexander Tochilovsky received his BFA from the Cooper Union and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is the owner/operator\, together with Mike Essl\, of The Studio of ME/AT\, a graphic design studio in New York City\, focusing on print design. He is also an adjunct instructor at the Cooper Union\, and the Curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. In 2009 he co-curated the exhibition Lubalin Now \, and since 2010 he has curated three other exhibitions: Appetite (2010)\, Pharma (2011) & Type@Cooper (2012)\, all at the Cooper Union. Alexander teaches the history and theory component of typeface design at Type@Cooper\, the postgraduate certificate program he co-founded in 2010 and an organizer of Typographics. \nRegister Online \nMembers: $350\nNon-Members: $450 \n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Fancifying Letters With Nim!
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, hand lettering has re-entered the world of graphic art & design as a wildly popular and sought-after skill. How\, then\, can one set oneself apart from the countless thousands of specimens flooding today’s market? Or\, more importantly\, how can one build one’s skills to a point where both friends and enemies alike will be filled with a disturbing amount of envy?  \nThis workshop will help participants explore new ways of approaching hand lettering and flourishing ranging from the style of letters used to the specific words being written. Participants will be given a brief historical overview of lettering specimens with regards to ornamentation and flourishing\, as well as a review of the exciting and boring aspects of the current landscape of hand lettering. A brief amount of time will be spent on preparing grid structures and letter placement for sketches. Participants will then be personally guided & mercilessly critiqued through creating and exploring their own hand lettering piece ranging from 1-3 words\, with attention to how the individual letters and entire words interact with each other visually. Although the main style of lettering being focused on is calligraphic in nature (script and gothic)\, participants can choose to explore any particular style they like. The workshop will also very briefly touch upon how to create vector artwork from sketches\, but participants are not required to bring a computer. \nRequired Materials: \n∙ No. 2 pencils (conventional or mechanical)\, eraser & sharpener\n∙ Whatever pens or other drawing implements you are comfortable\n using\n∙ Pad of tracing paper at least 8.5″x11″\n∙ Pad of pen/ink illustration paper at least 8.5″x11″ (recommended\,\n but not required)\n∙ 12″ ruler\, preferably clear plastic\n∙ An idea of a word or combination of words to write out ranging\n about 1-3 words in length (please refrain from anything typically\n ‘inspirational’ or ‘motivational\,’ like “Believe in Yourself.”\n Motivational quotes will be scowled at.\n∙ Patience and a sense of humor \nPlease note that this is not a calligraphy or sign painting workshop. Most of the work done will be with pencil and eraser\, although students are welcome to bring whatever tools they are comfortable working with. SUMMARY:TDC Non–Latin Workshop: Cyrillic with Maxim Zhukov
DESCRIPTION:To address numerous problems of Cyrillic type design the Type Directors Club is offering a two-day professional seminar and workshop\, TDC Cyrillic Week-End. \nThe increasing demand for multilingual typefaces has been boosted by the latest developments in the technologies of communications. The adoption of Unicode\, and the industry-wide transition to OpenType font format has put the skills and the expertise of type designers to a new test. There is a growing expectation of their being able to develop typefaces with expanded glyph sets that cover not one but a number of scripts. Cyrillic is one of these scripts\, used by large numbers of readers and writers and designers. \nThe following features and aspects of Cyrillic type design will be addressed:\n Cyrillic’s origin\, its history and evolution\, its structure\, its peculiarities\, its traps and pitfalls;\nCharacter-by-character overview\, comments and tips (character set: Windows 1251\, plus pre-1918 Cyrillic\, plus Serbian alternates);\nCyrillic and Latin;\nCyrillic and Greek;\nCyrillic caps\, l.c.\, and yes\, s.c.;\nCyrillic roman and Cyrillic italic (and Cyrillic cursive?);\nSerbian and Bulgarian Cyrillic;\nOld (pre-1918\, pre-1945) Cyrillic. \nMany existing Cyrillic typefaces will be referred to and commented on. Case studies of various type design projects will be offered. Open discussion of real-life projects will contribute to the practical value of the seminar. Participants should come to the Week-End with their Cyrillic projects (ready to show on screen\, in PDF)\, their problems and their queries. More thorough commentaries can be expected if the PDFs are emailed in advance. \nAbout the instructor:\nMaxim Zhukov specializes in multilingual typography. For many years he served as a typographic co-ordinator to the United Nations. He is involved in type design\, consulting for individual designers and foundries. He taught typographic design at his alma mater\, Moscow Printing Institute\, and the British School of Art and Design in Moscow. He now teaches at Parsons School of Design in New York. Zhukov often speaks and writes on typography and type design; he is a member of a number of Russian\, American and international professional societies and associations. \nSchedule \nFriday\, February 5\n03.00–05:30 p.m. \nField trip to Butler Library\, Columbia University. 535 West 114th Street\, 6th Floor\, New York\, NY 10027; USA. \nPrivate viewing of the rare Russian print and manuscripts from the Rare Book & Manuscript Library (RBML) and the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian & East European Culture. SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Letter Design & the Influence of the Pen: Calligraphy into Type and Back Again
DESCRIPTION:This course will look at the parallel worlds of type and calligraphy (hand pen lettering)\, how they have influenced each other over the centuries and are again today. From Gutenberg to Jenson to Aldus\, 15th & 16th century early type was heavily influenced by pen lettering of the age\, and over the centuries some of the best calligraphers have been involved with typeface production\, from Schöffer\, Arrighi\, Neudørffer to Gill\, Trump\, Zapf\, and on up to today. \nIn this spirit\, learn fundamental underlying proportions of classical capitals\, pen written and early types including Textura\, Roman and Italic. Fleshing them out with the broad edged pen reveals how the tool can naturally distribute and modulate weights throughout the shapes. This can open up possibilities for letter design not possible by drawing outlines alone. We can use the pen to analyze and learn more about pen related types\, how axis relates to pen angle\, how the broad edged pen line differs from the pressured pen swelled line and what types are influenced by either – eg Venetian vs Modern etc. We will go back and forth between written and drawn lettering\, and focus on the optical balance of the volumes inside and between forms. Harmony of spacing is inseparable from the linear shapes. \nRegister Online \nJulian Waters is an internationally renowned lettering designer who has worked for many important clients including U.S. Postal Service\, National Geographic\, and numerous agencies\, publishers and memorials. He earned much from his parents\, calligrapher Sheila and bookbinder/conservator Peter\, but he also studied extensively with legendary calligrapher and type designer Hermann Zapf\, starting in 1979. Zapf became a friend and important mentor to Julian\, asking him to substitute teach Zapf’s 2-week masterclass in 1984 at age 27 and then succeed Zapf at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1990. His typefaces include Adobe Waters Titling Pro family and “ThJefferson” for Monticello. In the 1990s\, Waters taught typography at Corcoran School of Art in Washington\, DC. In 2001\, he was invited to be part of the seminal “Zapfest” exhibition\, San Francisco.  \nIn 1997 he was The Rubenstein at Sidwell Friends school\, Wahsington DC. Waters has taught over 100 workshops for lettering professionals in USA\, Canada\, England\, Belgium\, Norway\, Iceland\, France\, Germany\, Italy\, Australia\, Hong Kong and Japan\, and like Sheila he designs and prints his own archival giclée prints for sale. In 2003 his publication “From Rough Sketch to Final Art” was issued by the Washington Calligraphers Guild. It is now out of print\, but “Sheila Waters at 80”\, the lavishly illustrated volume he compiled and designed about Sheila’s life and work is available. Julian has taught several times at Cooper Union\, NY and Wells College\, NY\, including digital font design. He has taught several series of 2\, 3 and 4 weekends on various lettering subjects around the US. These series which offer more depth compared with the usual single weekend format. Awards include Type Directors Club\, Print\, Graphis\, and his work is widely published.

SUMMARY:Good Global Type: On Typesetting Chinese
DESCRIPTION:Chris Wu \nMost trained designers and typographers are familiar with the ways to make roman letterforms look good\, and have keen control over letterspacing\, wordspacing\, line breaks\, line lengths\, and typeface choices. But what do you do when you have to typeset a language that you don’t speak\, read\, or write? The character forms are alien to you\, and you have only the default typefaces that come with InDesign. Which typefaces do you use\, and how do you use them? \nAs Western business and cultural relationships with China grow\, many in the West are having to typeset Chinese. This workshop introduces designers to typesetting Chinese\, and includes an overview of Chinese typefaces that are available\, current trends in type design and use\, and basic principles of Chinese typography. Participants will hear about current practices\, will typeset display type and text in Chinese\, and will have their efforts analyzed in critiques. \nChris Cheng-Huan Wu will lead the workshop. Wu is an Associate at the New York design studio Project Projects\, where his clients include BOZAR Brussels\, Canadian Centre for Architecture\, Field Operations\, Guggenheim Museum\, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates\, The Museum of Modern Art\, National Museum of China\, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation\, SALT (Istanbul)\, Vera List Center for Art & Politics\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, and the Yale University Art Gallery\, among others. Wu has produced a number of bilingual projects in China in the past few years\, including several exhibition catalogues: Downtown (James Cohan Gallery\, Shanghai)\, Timelapse (National Art Museum of China and CentrePasquArt\, Switzerland)\, and Verdensteatret: Telling Orchestra and Funeral Machine (Guangzhou Museum\, China). Recently\, he is leading a large scale\, bilingual exhibition design project for M+ Museum in Hong Kong\, titled Building M+: The Museum and Architecture Collection\, which opens January 10 till February 9\, 2014. \nWu was born and raised in Taiwan. He received his master degree in Communications Design at Pratt Institute and has worked in New York since 2007. Before coming to New York\, he was an Associate Art Director at Ideata Advertising / TBWA Taiwan and worked for international clients including Adidas\, Pernod-Ricard (Chivas Regal\, Jameson\, Martell\, Glenlivet)\, and Nissan. \nRegister online
