SUMMARY:David Berlow: Beyond the Quest for the Perfect Uppercase Partial Differential
DESCRIPTION:This free event\, courtesy of Google\, will be streamed live from Google HQ in New York City on the TDC YouTube Channel: TDC YouTube \nThe last 30 years has seen a great growth in generalized glyphs and styles. David Berlow’s talk will show what happens to and for typography when we start to get more specific about the fonts\, and thus the glyphs we design\, by having more generalized fonts. The first part talks about glyphs and illustrates how different scripts form ideas\, words\, and texts. Next\, David will discuss how this effects the design of glyphs over a size range and then how this effects the design of styles that can be specified to work together in web and print environments. He will then demonstrate and describe inter-script\, inter-class and inter-style typography\, and conclude with a question-and-answer session. \nDavid Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a letter designer for Mergenthaler. He joined the newly formed Bitstream in 1982. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989 to found The Font Bureau with Roger Black. In 2008\, Berlow launched Webtype with Petr van Blokland and others. If you are interested in attending the seminar\, please RSVP to Maev Brennan\, mbrennan@grolierclub.org\, (212) 838-6690 \nThis symposium is being held in conjunction with Alphabet Magic: A Centennial Exhibition of the Work of Hermann & Gudrun Zapf\, on view at the Grolier Club\, February 20–April 2. 2019. \nAlphabet Magic chronicles the extraordinary artistic achievements of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf with the most comprehensive exhibition of their work to date.  Zapf’s typefaces Palatino\, Optima\, and Zapfino (to name a few) are a part of our everyday lives in the United States and Europe\, as well as around the world.  He was also at the forefront of type technology.  Zapf’s Marconi alphabet design was the first typeface ever created specifically for digital typography.  Gudrun Zapf von Hesse secured her own design legacy through typefaces such as Diotima\, Carmina\, and Shakespeare Roman. \n \nIncluded in the exhibition are rare specimens of their typefaces\, landmark works using their typefaces\, original calligraphic works of art\, and examples of fine bookbinding.  In addition to completed works\, ephemeral process work for some of Gudrun and Hermann Zapf’s most important typefaces and publications offers a behind-the-scenes look at the masters at work.  Of special interest are sketches\, layouts\, and proofs for Hermann Zapf’s groundbreaking Feder und Stichel (1950)\, Manuale Typographicum (1954\, 1968)\, and Orbis Typographicus (1990).  As Robert Bringhurst has written\, Hermann Zapf has been “widely recognized as one of the most poetic of type designers\, or\, to put it another way\, as the author of some of the loveliest printing type ever made.” \nAlthough Gudrun and Hermann Zapf are perhaps best known for their type design\, over the course of their long careers they engaged with nearly every aspect of the book arts.  Hermann considered himself a book designer at heart\, Gudrun is a noted bookbinder\, and both were master calligraphers. \nCo-sponsors: American Printing History Association-New York Chapter\, Center for Book Arts\, Society of Scribes\, Type Directors Club\, Typophiles\, and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection\, Rochester Institute of Technology

A rare and engaging evening with two international superstars. \nThis special event will be held at Parsons. \nKarin Fong is an Emmy Award winning director and designer working at the intersection of film\, television\, and graphic design. A founding member of Imaginary Forces\, she is known for designing iconic title sequences. Her projects include the opening credits for the TV series Boardwalk Empire\, South Park\, and Black Sails\, and most recently Lost In Space  and Counterpart\, as well as numerous feature films. She has helmed spots for major brands\, including LEGO\, Lexus\, Target\, Sony PlayStation\, Toyota\, and Herman Miller. \nFrom large-scale video installations to video game trailers\, Karin’s diverse projects showcase her unique voice in visual storytelling. SUMMARY:TDC Movie Night in LA: A Night Highlighting Typography in the Film Industry
DESCRIPTION:The title of a movie is the first connection a viewer has with a film. From the moment a friend asks “Did you see that movie?” its title is the element with which your brain identifies the experience. But the look of that title its often relegated to a second plane. We believe that good typography makes a huge difference and it’s a factor in determining how well a film will be remembered. Typography has the power of merging a series of character shapes into the fabric of a movie\, so strongly that anything written on the style of that movie title\, immediately belongs to that universe. \nMovie Night\, hosted by Ana Gómez Bernaus\, will feature three incredible\, award winning movie poster and main title designers: Lisa Bolan\, Manija Emran\, and Tomasz Opasinski. Through their stories you’ll learn how typography can reflect the voice of the film\, and amplify the meaning of the words themselves. \nLisa Bolan is a creative director\, illustrator\, and title designer based in Los Angeles. \nOriginally from New York\, Lisa attended the Rhode Island School of Design earning degrees in both illustration and graphic design. After RISD she relocated to Los Angeles and began her career designing for film\, television\, game marketing\, music packaging\, and multimedia. \nLisa began working at Prologue Films in 2007. At Prologue\, she designed over 30 film and television titles including Beauty & The Beast\, Queen Sugar\, Of Kings and Prophets\, The Killing Fields\, The Fifth Estate\, Zoo\, Sleepy Hollow\, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part One & Part Two\, Arthur\, The Apparition\, ESPN 30 for 30\, and The Oscars. She has also created VFX and time-lapse sequences for films such as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part One & Part Two\, as well as illustrations and designs for title sequences including Tropic Thunder\, Sherlock Holmes\, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows\, Iron Man 3\, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty\, Black Mass\, American Horror Story Murder House\, Hotel and Suburbicon. \nSince becoming a Creative Director at Elastic in 2017\, she’s created titles for The Alienist\, Altered Carbon\, Pink Collar Crimes\, Yellowstone and C.B. SUMMARY:Brooklyn Lettering Walk with Paul Shaw
DESCRIPTION:TDC and Legacy of Letters are returning to Brooklyn for the first walk in the borough since 2015. This time the focus will be on a group of neighborhoods in the heart of Brooklyn bounded by Church Avenue\, Ocean Parkway\, King’s Highway\, and Utica Avenue: Flatbush\, Ditmas Park\, East Flatbush\, Ocean Parkway\, and Flatlands. It is a very residential area so that the lettering we will see will include many apartment building names and addresses. But there will also be small businesses\, churches and synagogues\, public schools\, Brooklyn College\, and two cemeteries to provide some variety. The lettering will include a few examples of neon\, some Art Deco\, some Hebrew\, lots of sans serif carved in stone as well as cast in metal\, and a few funky hard-to-describe letters. \nAs with recent lettering walks we will finish with a meal or a drink at a neighborhood restaurant or bar. \nPaul Shaw is a designer and a design historian. He has been leading lettering tours of New York City neighborhoods for 10 years and of other cities\, both here and in Italy\, since 1997. As a designer he specializes in letterforms from calligraphy to type design. Paul has designed or co-designed 18 fonts\, including Kolo\, Donatello and Old Claude. As a historian he has written or lectured about Bartolomeo Sanvito\, W.A. Dwiggins\, Oswald Cooper\, Frederic W. Goudy\, George Salter\, Phil Gruskin\, Hermann Zapf and others. \nMeeting place and itinerary will be emailed a few days in advance of the tour.

As technology\, tools\, and tasks change over time\, the languages we speak and the way we speak them need to evolve to remain appropriate and relevant. DESCRIPTION:Go beyond choosing the same fonts from the type menu to creating your own typefaces and become your own type designer. \nGet a crash course in designing type from Matteo Bologna\, Creative Director of award-winning studio Mucca Design. This (always sold out) 6 hours workshop will introduce you to the basic skills necessary for the wild journey into the super fun world of type design. This class will teach you the basics of designing and generating a typeface with the font-design software Glyphs (Mac only). \nIn the morning session we will learn the basics of drawing a font\, generate the font\, and use it in InDesign.In the afternoon\, we will add additional letters to the font\, learning how to kern them\, add diacritics\, and produce the combined letters. At the end of the day\, we will not have a finished font\, but a respectable start and hopefully you’ll be infected with the type making bug. \nRequirements:\nBasic Adobe Illustrator skills are necessary.\nYou must bring your own laptop with a full or trial version of the font design program Glyphs already installed (download a free 30-day trial). Sorry no Windows\, no Fontlab\, no Robofont.\nNo prior experience is required in font design\, but some experience with Bézier-based vector drawing tools is useful. \nABOUT MATTEO BOLOGNA\nMatteo Bologna is the principal of Mucca Design\, where he also serves as Creative Director. Under his direction\, the Mucca Design team has solved numerous design challenges and created uniquely successful work for a wide variety of global companies like Sephora\, Whole Foods\, Victoria’s Secret\, Barnes & Noble\, Adobe Systems\, Bacardi and Target. With his team he designed the identities for a variety of now classic New York City culinary destinations like Balthazar’s and Brooklyn Fare. SUMMARY:Creative Week Urban Lettering Walk: Garment District and Chelsea
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Creative Week Urban Lettering Walk is co-sponsored by the Type Directors Club\, The One Club\, and Legacy of Letters. Design historian Paul Shaw will walk participants through the adjoining West Side neighborhoods of the Garment District and Chelsea between 42nd Street and 14th Street to see letters. \nThe Garment District is an industrial neighborhood\, dominated by early 20th century setback skyscrapers with a variety of lettering styles for the building names. Mixed in with these gritty industrial buildings are a few churches and retail outlets to provide additional lettering variety. Chelsea is more residential with named apartment buildings\, schools\, churches\, and banks to provide lettering of interest. Stylistically\, we will see textura\, versals\, sans serif\, slab serif\, classical Roman capitals\, some Art Deco\, and a little bit of neon. In short\, a little bit of everything. \nPaul Shaw has been leading lettering tours of New York City neighborhoods and of other cities since 1997. As a designer\, he specializes in letterforms and has designed or co-designed 18 fonts\, including Kolo\, Donatello and Old Claude. \nMeeting place and itinerary will be emailed a few days in advance of the tour.

DESCRIPTION:Designer Tony DiSpigna will be conducting a tour of his exhibition currently on view at the Type Directors Club on Monday evening\, March 19 at the Type Directors Club. DiSpigna\, known for his graceful Spencerian Script and memorable logo design work\, will use his keen eye and sharp insight to give viewers an insider’s look at the work on display. Tony’s letters are never tangled\, but the tales he tells may be! \nThis entertaining and lively event\, is hosted by the TDC and the Herb Lubalin Study Center\, as part of Herb Lubalin’s centenary\, Lubalin 100 (www.Lubalin100.com]. It will be a memorable night of visual delights and lively conversation with someone who has spent his career coaxing the loveliest shapes out of letterforms. \nTony Di Spigna was born on the island of Ischia\, Italy. He is a graduate of New York City Community College and Pratt Institute. Tony was a partner in the legendary studio of Lubalin Associates where he worked on all aspects of visual communication and graphic design. He has achieved international recognition for his letterform and typographic designs including exclusive newly designed corporate typefaces and logos. He has won numerous awards and his work has been widely exhibited in The United States and abroad. In 2007\, he was honored with a one man show in Italy. He currently teaches at The New York Institute of Technology and is a tenured professor at Pratt Institute where he was given the institute-wide Distinguished Professor Award. \nTony’s fascinating and lavish book\, Love Letters\, was released in 2017.
