Two judges speak at Parson The New School on the Thursday before they review the entries to the Type Directors Club competitions for communications design and typeface design — Paul Barnes & Garson Yu.

Paul Barnes is a graphic designer specializing in the fields of lettering, typography, type design and publication design. He is a partner with Christian Schwartz in the internationally acclaimed typefoundry, Commercial Type. In the early 1990s he worked for Roger Black in New York where he was involved in redesigns of many magazines. He later returned to America to be art director of the music magazine Spin. Since 1995 he has lived and worked in London. He has formed a long term collaboration with Peter Saville, which has resulted in such diverse work as identities for Givenchy, ‘Original Modern’ for Manchester, the England football kit and the logo for Kate Moss.

Title designer and multimedia artist Garson Yu is founder and creative director of yU+co. Since 1998, yU+co has created over 150 film and television title sequences; earning an Emmy award and multiple nominations along the way. In 2006, Yu opened yU+co[lab], a division in Hong Kong specializing in new media, interactive and experiential design.
