The Eternal Letter:
Two Millennia of the Classical Roman Capital Codex Studies in Letterforms | The MIT Press

February 19, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Please join us on Thursday, February 19th, for a book signing and remarks by TDC members Paul Shaw, Linda Florio (the book’s designer) and Scott-Martin Kosofsky (its producer).

There are letterforms and then there are letterforms. But only one conquered a planet: the classical Roman capital. It is the greatest legacy of Rome and the Western World, more widespread than the rule of law. For every culture in which it is not the primary letter, it is always the second, the one that everyone learns.

Paul Shaw has edited a major, lavishly illustrated volume about these letters: The Eternal Letter: Two Millennia of the Classical Roman Capital. Published by the MIT Press, it is the first in a series called Codex Studies in Letterforms, an outgrowth of the former magazine Codex. The book is filled with articles by leading scholars and practitioners, including a number of TDC members and medalists. The Eternal Letter is a cause for celebration anywhere, but especially at the TDC.

Erik Spiekermann: “This volume sets the standard for all books that will ever be written on the topic. What an amazing resource! So much research, knowledge, and love have gone into it. It will be on the top of my desk from now on.”

Michael Bierut: “This remarkable volume is the most comprehensive, most thoughtful, and most entertaining examination of a single set of letters I’ve ever read.”

This is a free event.
