TDC Beatrice Warde Scholarship

While going through our archives, the Type Directors Club discovered that Beatrice Warde was its first female member. It was very exciting to learn that Ms. Warde, journalist, typographical scholar, and communicator on typography, was part of our organization. To honor her memory, TDC has named a scholarship after her.

The TDC Beatrice Warde Scholarship is sponsored by the Type Directors Club and Monotype in the amount of $5000 and will be awarded to a female (by birth or identified as such) student currently enrolled in their junior undergraduate year to be applied to their senior year tuition, which begins September 2019 and concludes by June 2020.

NOTE: Graduate students are not eligible.

To Apply : Complete and submit this Application and other application materials by February 22, 2019 to director@tdc.org

Application Requirements

The scholarship, based solely on merit, will be awarded to a student whose work demonstrates exceptional talent, sophistication, and skill in the use of typography. The criteria for the scholarship extends across disciplines from design criticism to type design and graphic design, since Beatrice Warde was a writer and educator who helped promote Monotype products. Just as Beatrice encouraged the best use of technology, the candidate’s work should demonstrate the application of typography to current media, not only print.

•  A completed Application
•  Include a statement
•  3 (Three) samples of work accomplished while at school/university
•  A grade point average of B or higher
•  A signed statement verifying that it is her (their) work

Beatrice Warde (1900-1969) enthusiastically believed in the merits of education and championed them throughout her professional career with the Monotype Corporation. Her office was an open door for any person interested in typography, and numerous people in the initial stages of their careers began their education with a visit. Her steadfast aim was to help all people understand typography better, which remained her focus in nearly every one of her hundreds of essays, books, articles, and lectures throughout her career.

Since 1946 The Type Directors Club, a non-profit professional organization, has been dedicated to educating its international membership and graphic arts community about type design and the myriad uses of type in the field of communication. As an organization which sets the standards of typographical excellence in advertising, design and publishing, it is our hope that the scholarships we are offering will encourage talented students to develop a love for typography and an appreciation of the significance of typography in the design process.

The Monotype brand has been synonymous with type for more than 130 years. Throughout its history, they have celebrated design and have pushed the boundaries of what type can do. Today, they are home to some of the world’s most widely used typefaces that are seen everywhere—on devices, the Web and in print. Everything they do involves creating, producing and making available high-quality typefaces, in addition to technology and expertise that help brands and consumers use fonts with ease and style.

Because Monotype is passionate about type, they’re also passionate about ensuring a vibrant future for type. Beatrice Warde was one of the best type advocates the world has ever known. Her dedication and enthusiasm for typography during her 30+ year career at Monotype is still widely admired, nearly 50 years after her death. Recognizing Beatrice’s spirit of commitment and excellence, they are proud to be supporting the TDC in this very special scholarship.
