TDC Salon: September 29, 2014. “An Evening of Typographic Amity” with Sumner Stone and Allan Haley
The Type Directors Club and Monotype held an intimate evening, featuring an informal typographic chat between Sumner Stone and Monotype’s Allan Haley. Sumner was queried about Magma™ II, about the careful reflection and typographic passion that went into the Adobe Originals, what drove his typeface design courses at Cooper Union, and what he thinks of the future of the craft. “I created ITC Stone® Sans early in the era of typography on the personal computer,” Stone recalls. “Since then, technology has advanced, particularly regarding the resolution of screens and output devices in general. I felt I could develop a new design which would include more subtle features.” This new design became the Magma typeface family. As part of the evening’s program, Sumner shares the story behind this important typeface family.
