Kurt Weidemann, 1926–2011
Kurt Weidemann, TDC member since 1966, passed away on March 30, 2011 at age 88. Kurt was one of the most prominent German graphic designers, working in his later years as a “one-man-studio” out of an old railroad signal tower in Stuttgart. After returning from army service during WWII, he finished a typesetter apprenticeship and subsequently studied design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where he later became a professor. For many years he acted as editor-in-chief of the renowned graphic arts magazine “Der Druckspiegel”, assisted by our member Klaus Schmidt as his American correspondent and editor.
Weidemann designed typefaces like Biblica, ITC Weidemann and others. He worked on corporate designs for well-known entities like Merck, Zeiss, Mercedes Benz and Deutsche Bahn (German Federal Railway), and he published several books besides writing numerous articles about type, printing and design for graphic arts magazines.”
