Is type dead?

November 14, 2013 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

An interview with Alan Peckolick about type then and now.

Designer Dominick Santise interviews Alan Peckolick about the changing role of type and technology.  The two designers will delve into the topic of reconciling the human need for motion and emotion in visual communications, with the simplicity technology requires. The interview will be accompanied by a visual journey of Peckolick’s significant creations in type from his new book Teaching Type to Talk by Pointed Leaf Press.

Accompanying the revolutionary spirit taking hold of American culture in the mid-1960s and 1970s, American graphic designer Alan Peckolick heralded a movement in graphic design, known as expressive typography. Along with his mentor and icon Herb Lubalin, Peckolick called for a new caliber of design: Dreaming up and hand-drawing letterforms that had never existed before, with type, which once exclusively played a supporting role to the graphic image, now taking center stage. Calling for conceptual typography over a standardized format, Peckolick gave letterforms a presence on the page, and also an attitude: Peckolick’s work is equal parts witty, shrewd, and impeccable, and is accompanied by original anecdotes as insightful and tongue-in-cheek as his designs. His designs talk back, and always speak up.

Teaching Type to Talk is the first-ever compendium to span the typographer’s career. Peckolick’s projects have included logo designs, posters, packaging, corporate identity, and annual reports for a wide range of organizations and many of the Fortune 500 companies. His designs have earned him over 100 design awards worldwide, including six gold medals from the Art Directors Club of New York.

Illustrator and designer Dominick Santise’s portfolio includes work for a diverse list of clients including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pointed Leaf Press, Quayside Publishing, Inc. magazine, Gruner and Jahr, and New Scientist magazine. He is the author/illustrator of several stories, including Beneath the Tree and The Earth Still Shakes, and has been working on an ongoing artisanal plate project and a member of Studio 1482.
