Scripts do not exist in a void, they are always a part of their surrounding, society and history. Multilingual typefaces are inspired by several writing systems, creating a delicate game of balance between the Latin and the non-Latin.
Mutual influences are an integral part of typography and type design. Letters are influencing each other and places they appear in. And vice versa – places influence letters as well. The talk will discuss what happens when Hebrew is interlaced with other scripts. Several projects will be presented, including an experimental project that merges Hebrew and Arabic and a Multilingual typeface that consists Hebrew, Latin and Amharic (Ethiopic) together.

These stories of design brought to life through influences and challenges include an insight to Hebrew and working with non-Latin typefaces.

Liron Lavi Turkenich is an Israeli type and graphic designer. After graduating from Shenkar College of Design in Tel Aviv, she traveled to the UK to study an MA in Typeface design at the University of Reading. She is working as a freelance typeface designer, designing mostly Hebrew typefaces for international clients and teaching typography in Tel aviv. She is also active in researching Hebrew type history, including the relation between the Hebrew popular typeface ‘Frank Rühl’ and Monotype company. Her project “Aravrit”, combining Hebrew and Arabic to one type system received a lot of positive publicity. She finds great interest in multilingual design and designed a type family consisting Latin, Hebrew and Amharic (Ethiopic). In addition to design, Liron writes in several platforms, participates in exhibitions and shares her knowledge and experiences in talks and workshops internationally. She travels frequently around the world in search for typographic treasures in archives.
