Made to Fit—Type Design and Context with Andreu Balius and José Scaglione

May 19, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

How does type define identity and communicate the voice of a project? Is there a correct typeface for each job? What about custom fonts? Bespoke typefaces can be expensive and time consuming to produce. Renowned type designers Andreu Balius of Type Republic and José Scaglione of Type Together will ponder options and present their personal projects.

Carmen: From Book Design to Lingerie
Andreu will discuss designing the typeface Carmen, from background historical research in 19th century Spanish typography to the face’s use in the glamorous pages of lingerie magazines. There are many stories behind the typefaces. This story focuses not only on the process of work but how important the context is when understanding type design.

Typography Made to Fit
Type design, that subtle conveyor of information and emotion, helps to create unique user experiences and establish brand coherence across the multitude of platforms and devices. However there are different shades of tailor-made typography, from simple modification of an existing typeface to creating a complete custom type family. José will explain, with the help of case studies, how a distinctive typographic look and feel can be achieved without breaking the bank. The talk will also unravel the tangle of licensing options.
