New Typography for the Holy Scripture

October 2, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Dirk Fütterer is a communication designer with more than 20 years of experience in the US and Germany. Since 2004 he is also a professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld, Germany, teaching typography and editorial design.

Since 2009, this large project has seen the Institute for Book Design in Bielefeld/Germany engaged in designing the 73 books and letters of the Bible on the basis of a new exegetic-literary analysis and in a way that is appropriate to their content and – also a vital aspect – in a way that is reader-friendly.

Around 60 (mostly student) designers have been working since 2009 on the undogmatic presentation of the biblical writings, which – unlike most of today’s Bible editions – does justice to the spiritual and cultural as well as the narrative and emotional dimensions of the text.

On Thursday, October 2nd 2014, the project manager and TDC member Prof. Dirk Fütterer will be presenting this mammoth project titled “Bielefeld Bible” in more detail and will be explaining why the project is still not finished and why it could fast become a task for life.

The Institut für Buchgestaltung (Institute of Book Design, IFB) was established at the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld/Germany in 2006. Its activities focus on the research and promotion of books, book design, and on inter-disciplinary cooperation and joint ventures with publishers, enterprises, institutions, academies and universities. The Institute was privatized in January 2014, and has since then been managed by Dirk Fütterer, Professor of Typography at the FH Bielefeld. Professor Fütterer is particularly interested in the functional and aesthetic development of analogue and digital reading media. In the past eight years, the Institut für Buchgestaltung has successfully produced books and other publications in cooperation with different publishers, including Birkhäuser, Hatje Cantz and Steidl. Books and publications of the institute have received numerous awards and mentions at important design competitions (including The most beautiful German books, TDC Award New York, Red Dot Award, ADC Award, German Photo Book Prize and 100 Best Posters).
