The Type Directors Club 63rd Annual Communications Design and 2017 Typeface Design Exhibitions are part of The Way of Type 2018, a three-part exhibition and associated design events that are travelling through China. In Shanghai, the Type Directors Club show is presented alongside The Ninth FounderType Design Competition, GTI Course Exhibition Tour, and the Elegance of Hanzi Chinese Type Design Forum. The “Type Directors Club 63” exhibition includes over 200 selections of winning work from the TDC’s annual international typeface design competition and communication design competition selected by an international jury of top designers.

The exhibition displays typography in a wide range of categories including books, posters, corporate branding, logos, web graphics, film and TV titles, products, and magazines from many countries including the United States, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the People’s Republic of China, South Korea, and others.

The curator of the Way of Type 2018 project is Liu Zhao, the Deputy Diretor of Chinese Characters and Arts Research Center at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. The curatorial assistant for the project is Zhou Zijian, with academic support from Wang Min.

Organizer of the Beijing exhibition is the Chinese Font Design and Research Center, College of Design and Innovation, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and FounderType alongside co-organizers China CITIC Press and SAFA Type Lab. FounderType and QL-ART are sponsors of the type exhibition and event.

This TDC63 exhibition opens in Shanghai following the exhibition’s tour to Tokyo, Seoul, Warsaw, Madrid, Bielefeld, Bangkok, Beijing, Hanoi, London, Santo Domingo, and New York. The Way of Type 2018 will tour to Nanjing and six other cities in China.

On April 20, the opening ceremonies began at 10:30 am with addresses by Professor Feng Yuan, Dean of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts; Dr. Liu Zhao, the show’s curator; Mr. Zhang Jianguo, VP-Font Business of Beijing Founder Electronics Company; and TDC executive director, Carol Wahler.

Afternoon activities on April 20 began with a presentation by Carol Wahler on seventy years of the Type Directors Club, Qiu Yin on “The Golden Times of the Type Design”, Qi Li on “The Method of Computer Type Design”, Roxane Gataud on “Processing Shapes”, Liu Xiaoxing on “Typography of Book Design”, and “Du Qin on “Unadorned Text.” Craft instructors of SAFA Type Lab will also be present.
