The Return of the Type Director

May 28, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A call to action for type-obsessed designers!
Elizabeth Carey Smith talks about changing your own trajectory toward a more type-filled career, and creating cultural change in your workplace to empower your design practice. After a brief overview of Type Directors of the Past, commiserate with her about the current disconnect between mainstream interest in type and its authority in studios and agencies. Why are there so many crappy logos in fashion branding? Who authorized that chrome bevel effect? Who’s in charge of typography here, anyway? Elizabeth introduces ways to think about type direction and how it can apply to one’s own career—from pushing for bigger type budgets, organizing your workplace type library, educating others about EULAs, doing your own custom type, to finally gaining authority as Resident Type Nerd.

Elizabeth Carey Smith is Design Director at Zady, an ethical fashion label. Since 2002, Elizabeth has practiced professionally as a graphic designer, art director, design director and typographer — building and creating brands, campaigns, and type for The City of New York, FEED, Williams Sonoma, GOOP, David Jones, and Anthropologie. She continues to make personal projects under the moniker, The Letter Office, and is a graduate of the Type@Cooper Extended Program.
