Workshop: Go Big! Lettering & Mural Design with Gemma O’Brien
January 27, 2018 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Sorry, this workshop is SOLD OUT.
Join Australian artist Gemma O’Brien at the Type Directors Club New York for a full-day workshop designed to teach participants lettering skills and techniques for large scale murals.
The first part of the day will focus on two methods of letter creation: drawing and writing. Gemma will share a variety of methods used in her practice to create bold and dynamic designs. Participants will explore expressive script with brush pens, blackletter with balsa and ink, and a series of illustrative lettering exercises.
The second part of the day will focus on taking a design from the page to the wall. Using creations from the first half of the class, participants will be taught how to rework and resize their drawings for a large-scale space and other tips and tricks to consider when painting a mural (setup, measurements, paint and brush selection).
All materials will be provided.
Gemma O’Brien is an Australian artist specializing in lettering, illustration and typography. After completing a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Gemma worked as an art director at Animal Logic, Fuel VFX, and Toby & Pete before deciding to fly solo as a commercial illustrator in 2012. Her typographic work takes on a variety of forms, from calligraphic brushwork, illustration and digital type, to large-scale hand-painted murals. She splits her time between advertising commissions, gallery shows, speaking engagements, and hosting hand-lettering workshops around the world. Her clients include Playboy Magazine, Nike, Volcom Stone, Kirin, Heineken, QANTAS, and Diet Coke. A number of her projects have received the Award of Typographic Excellence from the New York Type Directors Club, and in 2015 she was recognised as an ADC Young Gun.
Lunch is included.
