TDC61’s Best in Show Goes to Tom Hingston for David Bowie Video
At our annual award ceremony last night, the Type Directors Club announced that Tom Hingston has won Best in Show in the Communication Design competition for his direction of a video for David Bowie’s song Sue (Or in a Season of Crime).
The highly selective competition, the TDC’s 61st, honors outstanding typography from around the world. Hingston’s video was chosen for our top award by a panel of seven highly talented and respected judges.

The video’s monochromatic, shifting compositions of shadows, silhouettes, and projections capture the melancholy of Bowie’s song about a man left behind. The judges were extremely enthusiastic about the expressiveness of the projected type, which stretches, slides, and ripples across a roughly textured industrial landscape.
Tom Hingston runs Hingston Studio, an agency in London that specializes in art direction and design. Hingston started his own office in 1997 (after working for Neville Brody), and leads the design of a variety of projects in many kinds of media. As Hingston stated in a designboom interview, he believes that visual communicators should be capable of “moving seamlessly from one medium to another, transcending form to deliver the most brilliant idea, from start to finish.”
Tom Hingston was present to receive the TDC’s distinctive award, which takes the form of an oversized “sort” of metal type.
The 272 competition winners, as well as the winners of the typeface competition, are on display at The Cooper Union’s Gallery 41 until August 6. Exhibitions of the winners will also travel to many cities around the world, and will be published in the upcoming TDC annual.
