Invitation to Join the Conversation on Type, Media, and Culture at Parsons January 24

On Thursday, January 24 Type Directors Club is inviting you to join in on a great conversation with two of the judges who will be helping us to select winners from the TDC65 competitions — Emmy Award-winning titles designer Karin Fong of LA’s Imaginary Forces and Kristyan Sarkis, co-founder of TPTQ Arabic. Karin and Kristyan will present overviews of their recent work, their passions, and talk trends in design with Bobby C. Martin Jr. and Nina Stössinger, our two TDC65 competition chairs.

Karin Fong is an Emmy Award-winning director and designer working at the intersection of film, television, and graphic design. A founding member of Imaginary Forces, she is known for designing iconic title sequences. Her projects include the opening credits for the TV series Boardwalk Empire, South Park, and Black Sails, and most recently Lost In Space and Counterpart, as well as numerous feature films. She has helmed spots for major brands, including LEGO, Lexus, Target, Sony PlayStation, Toyota, and Herman Miller.

From large-scale video installations to video game trailers, Karin’s diverse projects showcase her unique voice in visual storytelling. Named by Fast Company as one of its 100 Most Creative People in Business and the recipient of the 2018 AIGA medal, she has won numerous awards in both advertising and entertainment. Her work has been featured at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, The Walker Art Center, The Wexner Center, SXSW, and in many publications about design and cinema.

Kristyan Sarkis, an internationally renowned type designer and letterer, is the co-founder and managing partner of TPTQ Arabic type foundry and the co-founder of Arabic Type Design – Beirut, the first educational program dedicated to the subject. Kristyan’s work has received multiple awards including the TDC Certificate of Typographic Excellence in 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2017, and Kristyan is joining with Wael Morcos on February 2 at Type Directors Club to host a fun, innovative workshop that will provide a unique opportunity to channel New York and Arabic style, culture, and letterforms. Bobby C. Martin Jr. is a designer and educator who co-founded the branding and design agency, OCD | The Original Champions of Design with Jennifer Kinon. His agency has developed brand identity systems for a broad range of clients that include the Friends of the High Line, Girl Scouts of the USA, the National Basketball Association, The New York Times and Nike.

Nina Stössinger is a Senior Typeface Designer at Frere-Jones Type in Brooklyn. Nina’s type designs include FF Ernestine, Sélavy, and Nordvest, and she teaches type at Yale School of Art, alternating semesters with Tobias Frere-Jones.
