Christopher Sergio
Christopher Sergio is an Art Director at Penguin Random House—the world’s largest English language book publisher—and has over a decade of experience designing and art directing book covers. Prior to his current position, Chris has worked in both publishing (at Simon and Schuster, Random House, Penguin USA), and in the arts (for the American theatre artist Robert Wilson and with Vito Acconci.) In addition, Chris is the principal of Christopher Sergio Design, whose work includes design for clients in film, media and the arts, and illustration for clients such as The New York Times.
Chris’ work has won numerous awards and been recognized by the Type Directors Club (including a Judge’s Choice Award in 2010, as selected by judge Mario Hugo), AIGA (50 Books/50Covers), Print Magazine (Regional Design Annual), Communication Arts (Typography Annual), and others. In Spring 2011, in collaboration with the designer Catherine Casalino, Chris launched the online petition “Save 50/50” and galvanized the design community in a successful effort to save the historic 50 Books / 50 Covers competition. The competition was founded over 90 years ago by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and is now hosted annually by Design Observer.
Chris is a graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts and Performing Arts, and attended the Art Students League. He is a native New Yorker, but his New York accent only emerges when in the presence of other native New Yorkers, alcohol, or (especially) the combination of both.
