Ilene Strizver
Ilene Strizver, founder of The Type Studio, is a typographic consultant, designer, writer, and educator specializing in all aspects of visual communication from the aesthetic to the technical. Her clients included Adobe, Agfa Monotype Typography (AMT), bethere.com, Galàpagos Design Group, International Typeface Corporation (ITC), and Johnson & Johnson.
Strizver formerly was the director of typeface development for International Typeface Corporation (ITC) where she developed more than 300 text and display typefaces with such respected and world-renowned type designers as Jill Bell, Tim Donaldson, Jim Parkinson, Erik Spiekermann, Sumner Stone, and the late Phill Grimshaw. She “cut her typographic teeth” by working on Upper & Lowercase (U&lc) and other type projects with such legendary icons as Ed Benguiat, Aaron Burns, and Herb Lubalin.
Strizver is a member of the Type Directors Club and the New York Art Directors Club and has won awards from them for both type and design. She has lectured extensively on type and typeface production to both students and professionals in the field. In addition to running her studio, she finds time to teach a course entitled “Gourmet Typography” at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her recent book, Type Rules! The Designer’s Guide to Professional Typography, has received numerous accolades from the type and design community.
