For over three decades, Louise Fili has been photographing the shop and restaurant signs of Italy. A major influence on her own work, many of these gems of vernacular design live on solely in her new book, Grafica della Strada, a typographic love letter to Italy. In this video, Fili shows many of the best signs from this collection, and talk about why she sensed the urgency to do this book.
Louise Fili is principal of Louise Fili Ltd, specializing in food packaging and restaurant identities. She is a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame, is a recipient of the AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement, and is co-author, with Steven Heller, of over twenty books on graphic design and typography. A best-selling monograph of her work, Elegantissima, was published in 2012.
