Hatch Show Print
October 8, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Hatch Show Print is a one-of-a-kind, extraordinary letterpress poster and design shop located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1879, Hatch is still designing and printing over 600 jobs a year, using the original wood type found on countless posters advertising carnivals, circuses, and vaudeville and minstrel shows, as well as hand carved imagery that spans the history of the shop. The shop is historically best known for its country music posters, and, since 1992, has operated as a non-profit division of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Not resting on its heritage, Hatch operates under the mantra of “preservation through production.” Recent Hatch Show Print customers range from Pearl Jam to Minnie Pearl, Springsteen to a Spring Fling, Mumford & Sons to a meat butcher. Design customers include Taschen, Country Living, Abingdon Press and the US Postal Service.
Brooklyn Workshops
In addition to their talk at TDC, the Hatch Show Print team will be leading two letterpress workshops at The Arm Letterpress in Brooklyn on October 10th and 13th. TDC members receive a 10% discount for the workshops by registering with the discount code “tdcmember”.
Celene Aubry is the Manager at Hatch Show Print. Since coming aboard in the summer of 2012, she has coordinated the shop’s relocation and managed a staff of ten. She also oversees development of additional Hatch Show Print programs and activities using Hatch’s new classroom and gallery, while still carrying on the shop’s tradition of preservation through production, by making posters for the customers whenever time allows.
Jim Sherraden is Master Printer and Archivist at Hatch Show Print. Since 1984 he has overseen its transition from a cultural survivor to a widely recognized graphic design icon and destination for letterpress enthusiasts. He is the co-writer of Hatch Show Print, The History of A Great American Poster Shop, published by Chronicle Books. Sherraden is the recipient of the 2014 UCDA Foundation Krider Prize for Creativity, the 2013 Distinguished Artist Award, for the state of Tennessee, and is the American Advertising Federation Nashville 2013 Silver Medalist.
