Modern Cyrillic 2014 Exhibition Opening

February 4, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Modern Cyrillic 2014 was held by ParaType, the premier Russian digital type foundry, and Shrift, the online typographic journal, both located in Moscow. Additional support was provided by the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Media of Russia, and Yandex, Russia’s biggest search site.

Modern Cyrillic 2014 is a sequel to Kyrillitsa’99 and Modern Cyrillic 2009, which were organised by Vladimir Yefimov (1949–2012), the art director and one of the founding fathers of ParaType, and Emil Yakupov (1957–2014), ParaType’s CEO.

Cyrillic typefaces—single- and multiple-style families and type systems—created and/or released after September 15, 2009 were eligible for submission. The final count of the entries received was 356 from 26 countries.

The competition was judged by an international team of experts in Cyrillic type design and typography: Dmitry Aronov, Gayaneh Bagdasaryan, Yuri Gordon, Alexandra Korolkova, Natalia Vasilyeva, Danila Vorobiev (Russia); John Hudson (Canada); Konstantin Golovchenko (Ukraine); and Jovica Veljović (Germany). The jury was chaired by Maxim Zhukov.

The judging of Modern Cyrillic 2014 took place in Moscow on November 25 and 26, 2014. Twenty-nine entries were chosen by the judges to receive honorary certificates ‘For Excellence in Type Design’.

This event is sponsored by Paratype and on display until Friday, April 1st.
