Post Typography: Greatest Misses

April 17, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen of the Baltimore design studio Post Typography give a behind-the-scenes peek at the design process, illustrated with never-before-seen projects that fell short, missed the mark, or were blown off-target by the fickle winds of client taste.

PostTypography_BMA

Originally conceived as an avant-garde anti-design movement, Post Typography specializes in graphic design, conceptual typography, and custom lettering/illustration with additional forays into art, apparel, music, curatorial work, design theory, and vandalism. Founding partners Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen have collaborated on design, art, and music projects for more than twelve years, beginning with hand-printed concert posters and progressing to higher profile design and illustration projects for clients such as the New York Times, U.S.  Green Building Council, John Legend & The Roots, and Penguin Books. Post Typography’s work has received numerous design awards and has been recognized by the Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, Print Magazine, the Society of News Design, and the Society of Publication Designers among many others. Strals and Willen teach classes in design and typography at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and are authors of Lettering & Type, a book on lettering and typeface design, published by Princeton Architectural Press.

Following the talk, Strals and Willen will field questions about The Wire, punk rock, and graphic design. The designers will also have available assorted prints and publications, as well as copies of Lettering & Type.
